I’m not asking this to insult anyone who is invested in the charts, but out of genuine curiosity as to why fans seem to be so invested in how things chart.
The recent decline of hip hop placing in the billboard top 100 seems to have fans of hip hop more invested in the success of new releases. Why is this? Artists who don’t get in the charts still release music and it’s still available on streaming, meaning your ability to hear their music isn’t really impacted the way it was when people might rely on the radio.
When it comes to rap or other genres I listen to, some of them chart and some of them don’t. Im not a label exec so it really makes no difference to me.
Is it purely down to fans having a parasocial relationship with artists that leads to them becoming invested in their favourite artist’s financial situation, despite them often being millionaires anyway? or is there a more logical reason for this investment in commercial success if strangers?
