I just got accepted to a research fellowship at my university and my proposed project will be looking into how Conscious Hip Hop contributes to personal and societal consciousness in both the U.S. and in Chile. So, I'll be listening to American and Chilean Conscious Hip Hop and analyzing it to hopefully find out how they contributes to the "knowledge of self" and of the societal factors affecting marginalized groups. I'm wondering if anybody has any suggestions, obvious or not, of music I should look into. With regards to American Conscious Hip Hop, I'm definitely interested in Yasiin Bey, Common, ATCQ, The Roots, and Eric B. and Rakim. For the Chilean side, I'm thinking about looking into groups like Makiza, Salvaje Decibel, Tiro de Gracia and Wechekeche ñi Trawün.
I'm wondering if anybody has any suggestions of artists/songs: obvious, mentioned or neither, of music I should look into. Also, if there's any questions on my project, please leave them! I'm at the beginning phase of it, so any questions will help.
