Since it’s the 5 year anniversary of his death I’m gonna bring this up. POP SMOKE’S CAREER WAS ACTUALLY A MOVIE !
Pop started rapping around November/December 2018 aged 19 and died in February 2020. So he was making music for 14 months(basically a year), so I’m saying his 2019/2020 rookie season might be the greatest of all time in rap history. Pop was a a regular street nigga with no industry connections when he first picked up a mic and started rapping when he dropped MPR. He was only a few months removed from graduating high school when this happens. He starts getting a little buzz in Brooklyn which spreads to the rest of New York; he then signs a recording contract with Victor Victor Worldwide and Republic Records. By the time he dropped “Welcome to the Party”, he was the hottest NEW rap artist in New York. He drops his first mixtape “Meet the Woo” which does well and churns out another street anthem “Dior” which went on to become a massive hit record and club anthem as the years went by.
Then by this point, Pop’s career is just going at a 100mph. He collabs with Nicki Minaj & Skepta and also gets co-signed by Cardi B. He’s now making bank doing small shows and club performances too. He also auditions and gets a role as a villain in a movie. He gets put on MTV and the Genius music channel. Then he gets invited to perform at Rolling Loud in LA. He also gets invited to Diddy’s 50th birthday party: Disclaimer - Pop Smoke did not participate in the alleged freak offs held at Sean Combs’ abode. His music is now international so he sells out several shows and performs in clubs in a mini UK tour. He then becomes friends and starts hanging with the likes of with 50 Cent, Travis Scott, Jamie Foxx, Meek Mill, French Montana, ASAP Rocky & Quavo who he seeks advice from and collaborates with too. He’s now working with elite music producers and flying private to Bahamas on to produce even more music. He gets invited to Paris Fashion Week by Virgil Abloh and gets styled by him in Louis Vuitton. He then drops his 2nd mixtape “Meet the Woo 2” which debuted at number 7 on the Billboard 200 12 days before he tragically gets killed in a home invasion aged 20 but the music he recorded for his debut album “SFTSAFTM” ends up going number one on Billboard 200 and churned out massive hit records like “For the Night” & “What you know bout love”. It is still currently the most streamed rap album released this decade.
In a music career that spanned only 14 months he managed to produce a discography that churned out 14 billion streams on Spotify, 3 songs with a billion streams(For The Night, Dior, What you know bout Love) and 6.5 billion views on YouTube across 82 songs.
If he didn’t die I think he would have been the rap superstar the new generation of rap is lacking because all the current rap heavyweights debuted in the previous era of rap. He had a unique voice, unique sound and his ability to sing would have given him the platform to be a global sensation if the music was up to par. I wish I got to see how his music would have evolved and what direction he was going to go with his sound.
Obviously Pop Smoke didn’t have the greatest peak but is there any rap artist that has ever had such a meteoric rise in from a nobody to a big star in such a small space of time? Y’all let me know.
